What were some theories about things smaller than the eye can see before the invention or the microscope?

I don't think people were aware of microscopic organisms until Anton van Leeuwenhoek's discovery of what he called "animalcules," and which we now know of as protists. Around the same time (1665) Robert Hooke published a book called Micrographia, in which he described plant cells, among many other things.
