Windows recovery Console not detecting the main windows hard drive?

So I am missing a file called config.sys i think. It said to run recovery console, so i opened recovery console, but it's only detecting the C drive? The main Hard drive that contains windows XP is the I drive, but i can't get it to detect that. It only detects the C drive, so how do i get the recovery console to detect the I hard drive?
